Laster finds certainty through Tiger Apprenticeship, Logistics Management program at Northeast

Laster earned 17 industry-related certifications while at NEMCC

BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (04/29/2026) — For many high school seniors, the future can feel uncertain.

For Jaxson Laster of Iuka, that uncertainty turned into opportunity through Northeast Mississippi Community College's Logistics Management Technology program and the innovative Tiger Apprenticeship Program -- an experience he now credits with transforming his life.

"Like a lot of seniors, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do," Laster said. "I was still trying to figure out my path. That all started to change when my high school toured Hago Automotive."

During that visit, Laster discovered an apprenticeship opportunity that immediately stood out.

After completing a competitive interview process, he was accepted -- setting him on a path that would make history.

Laster, who graduated from Corinth High School, became the first logistics apprentice at Hago Automotive and in 2025 the first-ever graduate of Northeast's Logistics Management Technology program.

"I've always been interested in how things work behind the scenes," Laster continued. "This opportunity allowed me to be part of something new, while staying close to home. It just felt right for my future."

Through the Tiger Apprenticeship program, Laster combined hands-on industry experience with classroom instruction, working three days a week while attending college two days a week. The balance, he admits, took adjustment, but ultimately proved invaluable.

"That structure gave me a head start in life," Laster explained. "I wasn't just going to school or just working, I was doing both. I was gaining real-world experience, earning certifications, and getting paid while learning. That's something a lot of people my age don't get."

The results speak for themselves.

During his time at Northeast, Laster earned 17 industry-related certifications, including Microsoft Office Specialist Excel Associate, Lean Six Sigma White Belt, Supply Chain Management and Capacity Planning, and Introduction to Collaborative Robots. He was also recognized with the Six Sigma Rising Star Award.

His experience extended far beyond Mississippi.

Laster was selected for a six-week international apprenticeship exchange program in Germany through his company's parent organization -- an opportunity that broadened his perspective and showcased the global impact of his training.

"That experience showed me just how far this program could take me," Laster said. "It opened doors I never imagined."

In addition to his academic degree, Laster is also earning a U.S. Department of Labor Journeyman credential as a Logistics Engineer -- further solidifying his position in a competitive and growing field.

Beyond certifications and accolades, Laster emphasizes the personal growth he gained through the program.

"I've learned how the corporate world works, how to lead meetings, speak in front of others, and present ideas," Laster said. "It's given me confidence and maturity that I wouldn't have developed this early otherwise."

Northeast's Logistics Management Technology program, paired with the Tiger Apprenticeship Program, is designed to bridge the gap between education and workforce readiness -- equipping students with both technical knowledge and real-world experience in high-demand industries.

As Northeast Mississippi Community College continues to expand its workforce-driven programs, stories like Laster's highlight the powerful role apprenticeships can play in shaping futures, strengthening industries, and building confident, career-ready graduates.
