2015 Feb 9

Over 240 Northeast Mississippi Community College students were inducted into the Iota Zeta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society during the organization's spring induction in the Seth Pounds Auditorium on Tuesday, February 3.

Each new member recited the chapter pledge under the guidance of chapter president Daniel Hill of Booneville, signed the Book of Oath and was awarded a certificate of membership.

Northeast alumnus and current Mississippi State University president Dr. Mark Keenum served as the keynote speaker for the induction ceremony and shared his thoughts on his time as a student at Northeast and passed on lessons he learned in life.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, plus Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions.

Nearly 3 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 131,000 students inducted annually. Phi Theta Kappa seeks to foster the development of leadership and service, to provide an intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas, and to encourage the establishment of scholarships for advanced education.

Northeast's Iota Zeta chapter has been recognized as a "Five Star" chapter for 12 straight years, the highest rating given any chapter, and has been recognized as an exemplary model.

Advisors for the chapter during the 2014-15 academic year are Dr. Ray Harris, Andrea Mathis of Booneville, Dr. Deborah Kehoe of Oxford and Carla Falkner of Tupelo.

Inducted into the international honor society was: Betty Autriella Allen of New Albany, MS (38652).
