Keshia Shernice Hibbler to perform in NEMCC Theatre's Spring Production

2014 Feb 17

Northeast Mississippi Community College's theatre department will present the classic Carl Sternheim farce, The Underpants February 20-23 in the Hines Hall Auditorium. Speech and drama instructor Christopher Schager will serve as director.

In the play Theobald Maske has an unusual problem: his wife's underpants won't stay on. One Sunday morning they fall to her ankles right in the middle of town--a public scandal! Mortified, Theo swears to keep her at home until she can find some less unruly underpants. Amid this chaos he's trying to rent a room in their flat. The prospective lodgers have some underlying surprises of their own.

"Steve Martin has translated a play written one hundred years ago by German born Carl Sternheim," Schager said, "the relevant themes of which, bourgeois attitudes, self-righteous hedonism and boastful philistinism are true today."

In this version of The Underpants, Steve Martin brings his comic genius and sophisticated literary style to Sternheim's classic farce from 1910. His hilarious new version was staged by Artistic Director Barry Edelstein, and opened in March 2002 on Off-Broadway to critical acclaim.

Cast members include Connor Burns of Booneville, Keshia Hibbler of Tunica, Jo Beth Lee of Olive Branch, Brandon Strickland, Ben Strickland, Tim Martin, all of Corinth, and Taylor Hayben of Guys, Tenn and Keshia Shernice Hibbler.

Show times will be at 7 p.m. February 20-22 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 23. Admission is free.
