NEMCC blood drive comes at crucial time

BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (01/13/2022) — For those with a New Year's resolution to help those in need, the Northeast Mississippi Community College Iota Zeta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society is providing the perfect opportunity.

Northeast's Phi Theta Kappa will kick off its tri-annual blood drives with its first drive of 2022 on January 25 and January 26 in the Black and Gold Room of the Haney Union on the college's Booneville campus.

Northeast's blood drive comes at a crucial time as the American Red Cross declared its first-ever national blood crisis during the second week of January.

With donations down over 10-percent since the start of the global pandemic in 2020, the Red Cross states that certain blood types are so low that there is not a day's supply on hand for medical facilities across the country.

Blood donors can stymie that trend by taking part in the Northeast blood drive.

Appointments are highly recommended due to COVID protocols but walk-ups will be accepted.

Masks are required for all patients and staff and social distancing measures will be adhered to during the donation.

To make an appointment, visit http://donors.vitalant.org and enter the Blood Drive Code: "NEMCC."

Appointments are open from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day.

Northeast's Phi Theta Kappa is coming off a successful blood drive in the fall where Northeast and Itawamba Community College combined to raise almost 100 donations for blood for local blood banks in the northeast Mississippi area.

Northeast produced 59 blood donations during a three-day "Out for Blood" blood drive September 20-22 while Itawamba was able to muster 37 donations.

While Northeast took the honor of winning the Out for Blood blood drive, the real winners were the local blood banks in the Northeast Mississippi area.

Vitalant has seen a significant increase in blood usage at area hospitals during the global coronavirus pandemic and will return to the Northeast campus two more times in during 2022.

With blood supplies reaching critical levels, the Northeast's blood drive comes at a crucial time for the area blood banks as organizations are seeing fewer mobile blood drives than normal due to the coronavirus pandemic and few educational institutions are hosting blood drives.
