NEMCC Campus Police join local agencies for multi-day school safety training
More than 35 participants from agencies across northeast Mississippi took part in the training
BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (07/31/2026) — Northeast Mississippi Community College's Campus Police Department, in conjunction with the City of Booneville Police Department and the Prentiss County Sheriff's Department, hosted a multi-day law enforcement training focused on school safety and emergency response at the college's Booneville campus.
More than 35 participants from agencies across northeast Mississippi took part in the training, including school resource officers, Northeast campus police officers, Booneville police officers, deputies from the Prentiss County Sheriff's Department, retired federal law enforcement officers, retired police officers and deputies, and retired international special forces personnel.
Training centered on preparing officers to respond effectively to incidents in educational settings through a combination of classroom instruction and realistic, scenario-based exercises inside Patterson Hall.
Participants worked through situations ranging from solo officer responses to coordinated team operations and large-scale incidents involving multiple victims and active threats.
Scenarios challenged officers to locate and neutralize threats, rescue and treat wounded individuals, communicate with responding agencies, and safely clear floors of the academic building.
Instruction utilized curriculum developed through the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training, commonly known as ALERRT, one of the nation's leading active shooter response programs.
Many of the exercises were modeled after actual incidents, including the 2022 attack at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, allowing officers to evaluate tactics and decision-making based on lessons learned from previous events.
Classroom sessions covered communication, threat assessment, tactical movement, casualty care and coordinated responses between multiple agencies.
Live-action exercises allowed participants to immediately apply those concepts in rapidly changing scenarios designed to mirror the stress and uncertainty officers face during critical incidents.
Throughout the training, officers progressed from individual response exercises to coordinated team movements before concluding with complex scenarios involving multiple officers, victims and evolving threats.
Instructors evaluated each exercise and conducted after-action reviews to reinforce effective tactics and identify opportunities for improvement.
