NEMCC offering Pickleball 101

BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (11/08/2023) — Northeast Mississippi Community College's Office of Intramurals is offering a community event to learn one of the nation's fastest growing sports.

Northeast will host two training and learning sessions for Pickleball at the Northeast Mississippi Community College Tennis Courts on Friday, November 10 at 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. for anyone interested in knowing more about the sport.

While Pickleball was invented back in 1965, the sport has seen an increase in popularity as a low-impact sport that relies not only on reaction time and precision but strategy as well to win.

Certified Pickleball instructor Mark Lowry will be on hand to discuss equipment, the basics of play, rules and scoring and other nuances of the game.

Pickleball combines the elements of not only tennis but ping-pong and badminton but unlike the other racket or paddle sports, pickleball is suited to be played indoors or outdoors.

Invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island in Washington state as a children's backyard game, Pickleball was named the official state sport of the state of Washington in 2022.
