NEMCC Phi Theta Kappa goes "Out for Blood" against ICC

BOONEVILLE, Miss. (09/11/2023) — Northeast Mississippi Community College's Iota Zeta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society is gearing up for a blood drive with a competitive twist.

From September 19 to September 21, the college will host its tri-annual blood drive, but this time, it is not just about saving lives; it is about winning the prestigious "Out for Blood" Blood Drive challenge against Itawamba Community College.

In this unique showdown, the two colleges will go head-to-head to see who can collect the most blood donations. The victor will be declared the Out for Blood champion and will have the honor of holding the coveted Out for Blood trophy for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Trophy presentation will take place during the Northeast-Itawamba football game on Thursday, September 21.

Participants wanting to contribute to Northeast's success can donate during the following time slots: from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20; and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 21 in the Claude Wright Room on the second floor of the Haney Union on the college's Booneville campus.

Those who wish to have their donations counted toward Northeast's total are encouraged to make an appointment at Vitalant.org and enter the sponsor code "T1279."

Blood collected from these drives plays a crucial role in saving lives.

Donated blood is used in various medical situations, including surgeries, trauma care, cancer treatments, and for patients with certain medical conditions like anemia.

By participating in this friendly competition, both Northeast and Itawamba are not only vying for an Out for Blood title but also contributing to the well-being of those in need.

The American Red Cross has sent out a call for donations stating that the national blood supply has fallen by about 25-percent since early August and blood product distributions to hospitals are outpacing the number of blood donations coming in.

Donor turnout has dropped on the heels of one of the busiest travel seasons on record, back-to-school activities and an already active hurricane season. The national organization is asking anyone who can to make an appointment to donate blood as it works to meet the demand for blood products in hospitals and medical facilities.
