Northeast Honors Institute opens applications for Spring 2027 semester
BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (11/05/2026) — Northeast Mississippi Community College's Honors Institute is accepting applications for the Spring 2027 semester.
Open to incoming freshmen and students currently enrolled in their freshman year at Northeast, the Honors Institute offers an academic experience that encourages students to think critically, explore new perspectives and make meaningful contributions to the college and their communities.
While academic achievement plays a significant role in the selection process, Northeast's Honors Institute recognizes that a student's potential cannot always be measured by a grade point average or standardized test score.
Instead, the institute uses a holistic admissions process that considers academic performance, character, motivation and a student's willingness to challenge themselves.
Students who do not meet every preferred qualification are still encouraged to apply.
For students currently enrolled at Northeast, preferred qualifications include a cumulative college grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.5 and completion of 12 academic credit hours, excluding developmental and activity courses.
Incoming freshmen are encouraged to have a high school GPA of at least 3.5 and an ACT composite score of 25 or higher, with no individual subscore below 19.
Students may also qualify for consideration through the completion of 12 college-level academic credit hours with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation, including one character reference and one academic reference, along with an admission essay.
Some applicants may also be asked to participate in an interview with the Honors Institute directors.
To help offset the cost of a college, Northeast's Honors Institute provides not only institutional scholarships to its members but thanks to the generosity of others, the organization has access to private scholarships as well.
Beyond the classroom, the Honors Institute places an emphasis on developing students who can make a difference in their communities.
Through service projects and other outreach opportunities, students are encouraged to put their education into practice while developing the skills needed to become productive citizens and future leaders.
For students planning to continue their education at a four-year institution, Northeast's Honors Institute also works to establish relationships with university honors programs, helping create a chance for students to transition into advanced academic experiences after completing their studies at Northeast.
Honors coursework is offered exclusively on Northeast's Booneville campus, and students interested in participating must be able to attend classes in person.
Virtual honors courses are not available at this time.
Students entering health science programs or other two-year degree programs are encouraged to contact the Honors Institute directors before completing an application to discuss how honors coursework may fit into their academic plans.
Deadline to apply for Spring 2027 admission is Saturday, November 14.
