From Big Rigs to Big Dreams: NEMCC Alumnus Blane Stevens Finds New Path in Higher Education

by Liz Calvery

BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (06/05/2025) — When Blane Stevens walked into Northeast Mississippi Community College in the spring of 2020, he wasn't entirely sure why. A veteran truck driver with nearly 25 years of experience, Stevens was simply seeking a change.

"I drove trucks for almost 25 years and was looking for a change of pace and a challenge," Stevens said. "One day, I stopped by and talked with Dr. Lamar Walker about attending college. At first, I thought it would be just something to pass the time. I never envisioned the path he would set me on."

That conversation turned out to be a turning point.

Stevens enrolled in a summer course that same year and followed it with a full 12-hour class load in the fall. Like many adult learners returning to the classroom after years in the workforce, he had his doubts.

"He told me he didn't think he could pass," said Dr. Walker. "But I told him we'd figure it out together."

With the support of instructors and a renewed sense of purpose, Stevens began to thrive. He quickly found success at Northeast, eventually earning a spot on the President's List. In December 2022, he proudly completed his associate degree.

But he didn't stop there.

"The following January, I was at the University of Mississippi-Booneville," Stevens said. "Two years later, I finished my bachelor's degree. This past May, I walked in Oxford."

Stevens credits the community at Northeast for launching his journey and helping him reimagine his future.

"There was a lot of help along the way. It started with Dr. Walker in Booneville," Stevens said. "The Ole Miss staff at the Booneville campus went above and beyond. All of this began at NEMCC. I cannot think of a better starting point for chasing a dream."

Now a college graduate, Stevens serves as a powerful example for other adult learners who may be hesitant to take that first step.

From behind the wheel of a truck to walking across the graduation stage, Stevens' story is a testament to what's possible when determination meets opportunity.
