NEMCC Campus Police promote Digital Safety at Career Development Academy summer camp
BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (07/30/2026) — Northeast Mississippi Community College Campus Police Department leaders emphasized personal and online safety during a recent session with students attending the college's Career Development Academy summer camp.
Chief of Campus Police Jason Jackson and Assistant Chief Melissa Pearson spent more than an hour engaging students in a discussion on digital habits, cyber awareness and real-world safety practices.
Topics included doomscrolling, rage baiting and the long-term impact of a person's digital footprint.
Jackson encouraged students to think critically about their online presence, noting that digital actions can follow an individual for years.
Cyberbullying and strategies for protecting oneself online were also addressed, including how to block harmful interactions and remove negative influences from digital spaces.
Campus police also highlighted common scams that affect individuals of all ages.
Officers explained how fraudulent text messages, emails and online links often promise high-value items or appealing offers in exchange for sensitive personal information. In many cases, those frauds result in identity theft or financial loss without delivering the promised product.
Jackson stressed that words shared online can have lasting psychological effects, particularly when individuals feel a sense of anonymity.
Students were encouraged to practice responsible digital citizenship and to understand the real-world consequences of online behavior.
Discussion also focused on maintaining a healthy balance between screen time and daily responsibilities.
Presenters reminded students that each day offers only 24 hours and encouraged thoughtful use of time, prioritizing sleep, family, education and personal well-being.
To enhance engagement, students were given a hands-on look at law enforcement equipment used by campus officers.
Participants explored service belts and tactical gear and had the opportunity to try on a ballistic helmet.
A highlight of the session included trying on a bullet-resistant Kevlar vest, allowing students to better understand the weight, fit and importance of protective equipment worn by officers each day.
