Ford's fourteenth installment will focus on sourdough

BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (04/21/2026) — Northeast Mississippi Community College First Lady LuAnne Travis Ford will present the next installment of her popular "Food with the First Lady" series on Thursday, April 30, at the NEMCC Health and Nutrition Center on North 2nd Street across from Little Caesars Pizza.

"Sourdough 2.0" will serve as the theme for the April session, building on a 2025 series that returns by popular demand.

Four sourdough-based dishes will be featured throughout the demonstration, offering participants a full day's menu centered on approachable, health-conscious cooking.

Ford will focus on making Soft Crumb Sandwich Slices from a sourdough loaf where participants will help prepare it and then will move to Sourdough Crisps (a thin cracker).

In with all the sourdough recipes, Ford will show participants how to make Strawberry Freezer Jam - that is great on the Sourdough Crisps or the Soft Crumb Sandwich slices.

Ford's Sourdough 2.0 session will conclude with sourdough chocolate chip cookies as a dessert option.

Two sessions will be offered for the April 30 event.

Northeast employees may attend a special noon session at no charge.

A community session will begin at 6 p.m. with a $20 registration fee to help offset food and supply costs.

Each session is limited to 20 participants and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participants will receive a keepsake cookbook featuring recipes from the session along with space for notes during the demonstration.

April's event marks the fourteenth installment of Food with the First Lady, a series that began in November 2019 with "Marvelous Muffins."

Since its inception, the program has explored a wide range of culinary themes, including Savory Soups, Freezer Meals, Summer Garden Suppers, Spring in Bloom, "A Sourdough Journey: Small Steps to a Healthier You," and "The Gift of a Good Meal," which focused on sharing comforting dishes during difficult times.

Earlier in 2026, Ford introduced "Cooking Around the Calendar," highlighting dishes tied to specific months and holidays.

Initial sessions featured Copper Pennies for January, heart-shaped biscuits for February, corned beef and cabbage for March, and King Cake for Mardi Gras.

April's installment shifts focus while continuing the tradition of seasonal and meaningful cooking.

Even during 2020, the series adapted to a virtual format with "Quarantine Meals," maintaining engagement and connection with the community during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic.
