NEMCC opens Citizens' Law Enforcement Academy for 2024

Eight-week academy will provide an insider's perspective on the internal workings of law enforcement agencies

by Michael H. Miller

BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (01/05/2024) — Northeast Mississippi Community College's Office of Continuing Education is set to launch its inaugural Citizens Law Enforcement Academy in collaboration with the Northeast Mississippi Public Safety Training Center at the beginning of the 2024 spring semester.

Northeast's Citizens Law Enforcement Academy aims to provide an insider's perspective on the internal workings of law enforcement agencies in northeast Mississippi and the tri-state region.

Through a comprehensive 24-hour curriculum delivered over eight weeks on Monday nights, participants will gain insights into various aspects of law enforcement, including administrative duties, pursuit driving, SWAT maneuvers, K-9 operations, shoot-don't-shoot exercises, calls for service, firearms training, traffic stops, awareness and self-defense, criminal investigations, E-911 dispatch, and more.

Northeast's primary objective of the academy is to equip citizens with accurate and practical information about law enforcement and criminal justice processes, enabling them to make informed decisions on matters involving their local law enforcement agencies.

Law enforcement and criminal justice experts will serve as speakers and instructors, offering lectures, demonstrations, tours, and hands-on activities to enhance participants' understanding of these critical topics.

Northeast's Citizens Law Enforcement Academy is free of charge and will run from January 8 through February 26, 2024 from 6-9 p.m.

Organizers have worked to make the Citizens Law Enforcement Academy schedule available to as many participants as possible.

However, slots in the initial class are limited, so those wanting to join the Citizens Law Enforcement Academy are encouraged to sign up early for the academy.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens, possess a valid driver's license, and meet other specific eligibility criteria outlined in the application process.

Interested individuals can apply by visiting https://nemcc.formstack.com/forms/citizens_le_academy_appl and submitting the required documents, including a copy of a current driver's license.

Organizers stress that this program is not an application process to become a police officer but rather an opportunity for community members to gain valuable insights into law enforcement practices.
