NEMCC's PTK captures "Out for Blood" trophy for third consecutive year

Tigers Edge Indians in Annual Blood Drive Rivalry

by Michael H. Miller

BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (11/06/2025) — Northeast Mississippi Community College's Iota Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society has once again proven that Tigers will bleed for a cause they believe in.

For the third year in a row, Northeast has captured the "Out for Blood" trophy, edging out its closest rival, Itawamba Community College (ICC), in the 2025 installment of the annual blood drive competition.

In one of the tightest finishes in the event's five-year history, Northeast narrowly topped Itawamba 58 units to 53, with the two schools combining to collect more than 110 units of blood for area blood banks.

A Rivalry for Good

Separated by less than 50 miles and sharing students and alumni from the state's northeast corner, Northeast and Itawamba have built a spirited rivalry by rolling up their sleeves.

Since the event's start in 2021, the two schools have combined to raise over 500 units of blood -- enough to potentially impact more than 1,500 lives.

According to Vitalant, the blood service partner for the event, each unit of donated blood can be separated into three components -- red cells, plasma, and platelets -- allowing one donation to help up to three different patients.

A Look Back at the Rivalry

Since its start, the "Out for Blood" competition has seen both schools consistently increase their community impact:

2025: Northeast (58) - ICC (53) | 111 total units collected

2024: Northeast (61) - ICC (53) | 127 total units collected

2023: Northeast (61) - ICC (53) | 114 total units collected

2022: ICC Victory | Over 75 total units collected

2021: Northeast (59) - ICC (37) | Nearly 100 total units collected
