Northeast Mississippi Community College set for online-only summer school

by Tony Finch

BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (04/09/2020) — Students planning to enroll in summer school classes at Northeast Mississippi Community College should keep their computers and iPads charged up and ready to go.

College officials decided this week that all summer school classes will be offered exclusively online due to the continued threat of the COVID-19 virus.

Spring semester classes at Northeast have been strictly online since mid March and president Dr. Ricky G. Ford believes the school's iPad initiative and the faculty's commitment to the use of technology in the classroom made that change as successful as possible.

"Northeast is probably one of the premier institutions in the country that was already pretty much prepared for an instance like this with our online instruction, with our technology usage in the classroom, with our Canvas platform and all the capabilities within Canvas that we were already utilizing," Ford explained. "Within a matter of a day and a half, we had shifted over 600 face to face classes to an online platform. So it was a very seamless process for us. We've moved forward with that and the students are buying into it.

"Northeast is blessed to have been well prepared for this and we're continuing to share any information that we have with any of our sister institutions because the bottom line is this, at the end of the day, we must still provide a top quality education for our students and Northeast is well prepared to do that. So we're looking forward to continue moving forward with it."

Northeast is currently ranked number one in the state among all colleges and universities in online education and second nationally among all community colleges for online instruction. In January Northeast became just the eighth higher education institution in the world to be recognized by Apple as a Distinguished School for innovation, leadership and educational excellence.

Registration for both terms of summer classes and the 2020 fall semester will open for students returning to Northeast Monday, April 13.

First-time students and transfer students should participate in Online Orientation in order to enroll. Designed to make the transition from high school to college as easy as possible,

Orientation sessions, originally scheduled to be on the Booneville campus in June, will now be an one-hour online course. Registration for the Online Orientation course is open at nemcc.edu and is free.
