Northeast's Athletic Training Department helps student-athletes beat the summer heat

by Michael H. Miller

BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (08/20/2025) — With the Mississippi summer heat showing no signs of slowing down, Northeast Mississippi Community College's Athletic Training Department is stepping up with a cool solution -- literally.

Northeast has become one of the first community colleges in the nation to offer student-athletes a refrigerated trailer to support post-practice recovery and heat relief. The 53-foot trailer, rented through Equipment Solutions in Jackson for a month, was brought to campus through the leadership of Head Athletic Trainer Ziggy Marro.

"Our goal is always athlete safety first," Marro said. "This trailer gives us a controlled, efficient way to manage heat and muscle recovery after practices in extreme temperatures."

Northeast's refrigerated trailer can reach temperatures as low as -15 degrees Fahrenheit (negative 15 below zero) and accommodates up to 44 chairs, allowing for multiple athletes and entire teams to use it in one session.

Student-athletes typically enter the trailer at a temperature between 15- and 20-degrees Fahrenheit and remain inside for 3 to 5 minutes.

Not only does the trailer provide a groundbreaking method for post-practice cooling, it also replaces the need for large ice baths.

This streamlined approach allows the athletic training staff to treat more athletes in less time and offers a more consistent and sanitary cooling method.

Northeast's football team has been the main participant so far, using the trailer after summer practices.

Northeast's volleyball team also took advantage of the cool-down station on their first day of practice, stepping into the trailer for a few minutes of icy relief.

In addition to daily recovery, the trailer is also available as an emergency relief station for any athlete who may become overheated during practice or competition.

"We're proud to lead the way in athlete care and recovery," said Marro. "This trailer gives us another valuable tool to protect our student-athletes in the harshest parts of the season."
