Pearson named Interim Chief of Campus Police at NEMCC

Veteran police officer becomes first female to lead the Northeast Police Department since its incorporation

BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (03/26/2024) — Northeast Mississippi Community College assistant chief of campus police Melissa Pearson has been named interim chief for the remainder of the spring semester.

Pearson takes over temporary leadership of the department due to the sudden passing of former chief Anthony Anderson.

While serving as an officer in the department, Pearson was promoted to the rank of assistant chief in July 2021 when Anderson became chief.

"Melissa Person's dedication and experience make her the ideal candidate to step into the role of interim police chief," college president Dr. Ricky G. Ford said.

"Her commitment to the safety and well-being of our campus community is unwavering, and I have full confidence in her ability to lead our police department during this transition period."

Pearson is a graduate of the Mississippi Delta Community College Law Enforcement Academy and holds a variety of degrees aimed at public service.

Pearson holds an Associate of Arts degree in criminal justice from Northeast Mississippi Community College and focused her advanced studies at the University of North Alabama from where she earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in social work.

Vice president of student services Ray Scott echoed Ford's confidence in Pearson as the college moves forward through the rest of the semester.

"Melissa has been an integral part of Northeast for 15 years and has already demonstrated exemplary leadership qualities during this time," Scott said. "We are confident in her ability to uphold our high standards of safety and security."

Chartered on July 1, 2005, the goal of the Northeast Mississippi Community College Campus Police Department is to provide a safe and secure environment that is conducive to the educational experience for students, staff, faculty, and visitors while upholding the rules and regulations of Northeast Mississippi Community College, the laws of the State of Mississippi and the United States of America.

Pearson becomes just the fifth person to lead the Northeast Police Department and first female to take the top spot since its incorporation.

On campus classes for the spring semester at Northeast conclude Thursday, April 25.
