NEMCC, Region IV Mental Health Services join together for on-campus counseling services
BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (08/17/2022) — With mental health at the forefront of most discussions centered on improving the quality of life of today's youth, Northeast Mississippi Community College has joined with Region IV Mental Health Services (Region IV MHS) to provide on-campus counseling services to its students.
Region IV MHS, which has been providing school-based services to Alcorn, Prentiss, Tippah and Tishomingo counties in northeast Mississippi since August 1997, recently announced the expansion of those outpatient services to Northeast. This new partnership will provide the college campus-based access to behavioral health and substance use care for students enrolled at the college.
"We are excited for the opportunity that Region IV has provided us to enhance our mental health services for our students," said Ray Scott, Northeast vice president of student services.
"This will be another branch of our counseling and success center."
According to Leigh Ann Stewart, Northeast's director of counseling services, this partnership is a very important step for the college to take in continuing its commitment to the emotional well-being of its students.
"We have an excellent counseling staff," Stewart explained, "but our role on this campus is to provide short term, solution-focused counseling services to our students.
"When we have students that need more intensive, long term treatment, our only option before this partnership was to make off campus referrals, which is not an option for many of our students due to financial hardship.
"Region IV is going to be able to provide this treatment to our students with the convenience of an on site therapist."
Overall, the goal is to identify and offer services to persons experiencing mental health adversity. Services and supports are based on individual need and may include, but are not limited to, intake assessment; risk assessment; individual, group and family therapy; crisis intervention services; community support services; and access to Medication Evaluation and monitoring.
"Region IV MHS is placing a licensed/certified master's level therapist, trained in Evidenced-Based Practices, on campus for one and a half days per week with the potential to increase availability as needed. We are pleased to offer these services as we know the ever-changing landscape of society carries many challenges creating a need for support to maneuver life's hurdles," explained Nikki Tapp, clinical director at Region IV MHS.
