NEMCC renames technology conference in honor of founder
Northeast's Mobile Learning Conference will now be known as The Jeffrey Powell Mobile Learning Conference
BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (05/04/2023) — Northeast Mississippi Community College has announced that the name of its annual summer technology conference has been changed to the Jeffrey Powell Mobile Learning Conference in honor of the conference's late founder.
Powell, an Apple Distinguished Educator, and an enthusiastic advocate for technology in education, founded the Mobile Learning Conference in 2009 as a small, local workshop held on the Northeast Booneville and Northeast Corinth campuses.
"Realizing the importance of technology in the realm of instruction being the passion of Jeffrey Powell, we are pleased to name the Mobile Learning Conference -- The Jeffrey Powell Mobile Learning Conference," said Northeast president Dr. Ricky G. Ford. "Jeffrey had a passion and vision for the infusion of technology into the instructional process, and this recognition only enhances that vision. We will continue to educate our educational partners, enhance the mission of Mobile Learning and honor Jeffrey as well."
Since its inception, the Mobile Learning Conference has grown into a global event that connects educators from all over the world. The conference has become an invaluable resource for educators looking to integrate technology into their classrooms and enhance teaching and learning.
In recognition of Powell's contributions to the conference and the field of technology in education, Northeast has renamed the conference in his honor. The Jeffrey Powell Mobile Learning Conference will continue to serve as a platform for educators to share ideas, strategies, and best practices for using technology to improve teaching and learning.
"Mobile Learning is an important aspect of education in today's digital age, and it's crucial to have leaders like Jeffrey Powell who are passionate about exploring its potential to transform learning," said Northeast vice president of instruction Dr. Michelle Baragona. "By naming the conference after him and continuing to support his vision, we are not only honoring his achievements but also inspiring others to follow in his footsteps and explore the possibilities of mobile learning in education."
This year's Jeffrey Powell Mobile Learning Conference will be held in June 2023 in two forms: virtually and in person.
Virtual conference sessions will be held on June 8-9, while in-person conference will be held on June 12-14 on the Northeast Corinth campus.
Attendees may register for the virtual conference, the in-person conference, or both, with CEUs available for those who participate.
"Overall, honoring Jeffrey and continuing to support his vision of technology in education is a positive step towards advancing the field of educational technology and ensuring that his contributions are recognized and valued," Baragona said.

Northeast Mississippi Community College institutional technology specialist Jeffrey Powell, a native of Tishomingo, was instrumental in making the Northeast one of the top digital colleges in the country and helping the college earn its recognition as an Apple Distinguished School. Powell passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo at the age of 44.

Northeast Mississippi Community College institutional technology specialist Jeffrey Powell receives the Olon E. Ray Leadership and Innovation Award from Northeast president Dr. Ricky G. Ford at the Creating Futures Through Technology Conference in 2017. Powell became the first person in the state to receive the award that is based on technological innovation. Powell passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo at the age of 44.
