NEMCC TigerTalk podcast ranks second in nation
Weekly podcast from Northeast Mississippi Community College has been broadcasting since 2017
BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- (05/27/2024) — Northeast Mississippi Community College's "TigerTalk" podcast has been serving the listeners of one of the nation's premier community colleges since October 2017.
Now, the weekly podcast has been named as the second-best community college podcast in the nation according to FeedSpot.
FeedSpot judged nearly 500 community college podcasts on traffic, social media following and freshness to churn out its ranking of the best community college podcasts in the nation.
Northeast's TigerTalk podcast is produced weekly with the help of Northeast President Dr. Ricky G. Ford, Marketing and Public Relations Specialist Liz Calvery and Public Information Specialist Michael H. Miller.
"The Tiger Talk podcast is a valuable tool to stay connected with our students, faculty, employees, and communities," said Ford. "We are able to provide updates concerning events happening in the future. Also, we utilize the podcast as an opportunity to discuss and comment about various important topics concerning our students and Northeast Mississippi Community College."
It was that weekly frequency that helped TigerTalk land the second-place position. TigerTalk is produced on a weekly basis and is also featured on 102.3 The Shark out of Ripley every seven days. However, some on the list only produce one or two episodes a year.
Northeast's TigerTalk also features a commute-friendly 12 minute time limit on its shows while others push nearly an hour or three hours on the podcast format.
Northeast's podcast covers all things academic, athletics, workforce and everything in between as the opening monologue by Northeast assistant director of bands and brass instructor Dr. Jason Beghtol states at the beginning of each episode.
Since changing to its new format during the COVID pandemic, the podcast sees Ford addressing a question from the host for about half of the time and then switching into a brief set of news and updates about the college where he talks about what is going on at Northeast, what is happening and what the upcoming set of events is.
Only one school in the Top 25 beats Northeast's frequency for publishing a podcast and that the "Leading Community Colleges in California" podcast which produces one 50-minute podcast each day for its listeners.
Northeast's closest podcast in terms of social media following and frequency of production was Tulsa Community College's "Big Blue Podcast," which publishes three times a month with an average of 14 minutes per episode.
In the total list of 496 community college podcasts surveyed, the average length of a podcast was 22 minutes with some podcasts reaching above the three (3) hour mark for ones that were produced on a monthly basis.
Northeast is also one of the longest running community college podcasts in the nation according to the list. Northeast started broadcasting in October 2017 while others that have made the list only recently in 2021, 2022 or 2023.
Northeast's TigerTalk podcast was instrumental in getting information out to Northeast employees, students and community members during the shutdown that happened during the COVID-19 pandemic as the podcast shifted to a mobile production as then-host Will Kollmeyer and Ford producing their segments from the safety of their homes.
Northeast is one of the truly organic community college podcasts on the list as well with others coveting rich corporate sponsorships or being produced entirely outside the education environment for each publication - such as local businesses, pizza restaurants or major conventions that are happening.
Of the 496 community college podcasts that were judged, FeedSpot looked at podcasts from across the United States and beyond including some in Alaska, some in Florida, some in New Yor, and California and even the "Kuilei Courageous Conversations" podcast at Kapi'olani Community College, which is named after Hawaiian Queen Julia Na-pela-kapu-o-Kakae Kapi'olani.
A pair of Tennessee schools made the list with Northeast State Community College's "The Sound Bearier" checking in at No. 15 in the country with one 30-minute episode each quarter and Pellissippi State Community College in Alcoa, Tennessee, registering at No. 18 with its "Service-Learning Podcast: Teaching Through Service," which is produced once a year for an average of 26 minutes.
TigerTalk even went up against some podcasts that are not associated with one particular community college but the podcast addresses issues that are pertinent to the community college environment.
"The Community College Voice Podcast," originates out of Washington, D.C. and is published one time a quarter for 25 minutes and "The Community College Drop Out," podcast features host Stevie Summers who tells stories of his time in community college and what life has thrown at him since he dropped out of community college. Summers' podcast is one time per quarter and extends for 39 minutes.
One of the podcasts that addresses what community colleges as a whole have to go through is out of The Good School in Baltimore, Maryland where its podcast looks at the complexities in higher education as it concerns community colleges. That podcast is published four times a year with each episode lasting 15-17 minutes.
For Northeast, each TigerTalk podcast episode is sent out to all major podcast platforms and for those who prefer a video format, each episode is also converted into a video and placed on the podcast's YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/@nemcctigertalk.
