Northeast Mississippi Community College to co-host NISOD Regional Workshop on Generative AI in Education
BOONEVILLE, Miss. (07/28/2024) — Northeast Mississippi Community College has been selected as a co-host for the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Regional Workshop on Friday, October 4.
Northeast's role in the NISOD Regional Workshop will see Dr. Timothy Mousel present an innovative and audience-engaging session titled, "Implementing Generative AI in Curriculum Design and Student Learning: A Hands-On Workshop."
Mousel will explore the transformative power of generative artificial intelligence in higher education, demonstrating its potential to invigorate curriculum design, assignment creation, and student engagement.
Attendees will gain firsthand experience with AI applications and learn how to integrate this cutting-edge technology into their teaching practices.
Participants of the workshop will have the opportunity to earn 0.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
Cost for the four-and-a-half-hour workshop (10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.) is $250 per person for NISOD member colleges to attend during early registration and that goes up to $300 per person during late registration.
For schools who are not members of NISOD, early registration $400 per person while late registration is $450
Lunch will be provided by NISOD from 12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Participants will engage in hands-on activities to apply generative AI practically in education.
By the end of the workshop, attendees will:
- Understand the principles and applications of generative AI in education.
- Learn to craft and refine prompts for generating desired AI outputs.
- Develop and present a lesson plan integrating AI in a simulated classroom.
- Create an action plan with timelines and milestones for implementing AI in their teaching, addressing ethical considerations and potential challenges for the next academic year.
Mousel is a highly renowned educator specializing in the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. He has received the 2022 Lone Star College Online Faculty Excellence Award and the 2023 NISOD Excellence Award for his significant contributions to the field.
Mousel began his programming journey in the late 1990s and has since developed two commercial AI educational tools, enhancing student learning experiences.
As a full-time faculty member in the Kinesiology department at Lone Star College (LSC)-Online, Mousel has presented on AI at several prestigious events, including the Innovation Symposium, the Lone Star College systemwide Teaching and Learning Conference, CyFair Power Day, and the AI in Higher Education conference.
His presentation, "AI-Assisted Instructional Design: Creating Engaging and Effective Learning Materials," at NISOD's 2023 International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, was well-received.
