NEMCC to host virtual Honors Day program

BOONEVILLE, Miss. (04/24/2020) — As with many things since the social distancing guidelines and shelter-in-place orders became the new normal, Northeast Mississippi Community College is going virtual with another special event.

Northeast's virtual Honors Day program will be presented by the college's Iota Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges, Wednesday, April 29 at 5 p.m. on the school's Facebook and YouTube pages.

Held each spring prior to Northeast's annual commencement ceremonies, the program recognizes individual students and student organizations for outstanding performance in academics during the past school year.

Northeast president Dr. Ricky G. Ford believes regardless of the circumstances or format, this program is very important not only to the students and their families but to the life of the college as well.

"We are very proud of our students," Ford said. "Northeast is here to provide them a quality higher education experience and when they excel in their endeavors in relation to that, we believe they deserve recognition, so this program is special to us."

According to vice president of instruction Dr. Michelle Baragona, college administrators were determined to create a way to have the program this year regardless of the uncertainty surrounding our community, state, and nation.

"Our thinking was having the program as we normally do, although virtually, would serve as a bright spot amid the stress of constant changes due to COVID-19," Baragona explained.

Additionally, some faculty and staff will be recognized during this year's program, which will feature approximately 175 students honored for academic achievement.
